Calabasas Community Theater
Calabasas, California

Spotlight the Arts (STA) engaged Barton Myers Associates, Inc. (BMA) to prepare a conceptual site plan for a proposed Performing Arts Theater on a site located at the southern end of the Calabasas Civic Center site. The purpose of this conceptual site plan is to determine the maximum footprint of such a theatre on the site. STA asked BMA to coordinate its planning with the Civic Center Group which is conducting a feasibility study regarding this project.

The BMA plan, developed in conjunction with Robert R. Scales, shows a 400-seat proscenium theater with a modified fly tower and a 99 seat multiform theatre. The project also includes 7,439 net sf of public space, and all requisite performer support, stage support, production and administrative spaces. All the program is contained within the site limits, respecting the 26’ fire lane to the north and creating an 8’ zone between the Theater and hill to the south. Two levels of parking accommodating 136 spaces has been planned below grade and within the bounds of the site. The proposed Theater will be located on axis with the Civic Plaza created by the Robert Stern Library and City Hall buildings. While not in use, the paved fire lane will be used to create additional public plaza space adjacent to the Theatre lobby.
